Project
The UN Sustainability Goals reflect the direction in which the world is seeking to develop as well as the pace. It brings together environmental, social and economic goals in one cohesive package. But goals need to be delivered. They need to be communicated and internalised: progress needs to be monitored and the goals achieved. The One World Trust has been working with Action for Sustainable development to support this process.
The UNDP, in the spring of 2022, granted the One World Trust / Action for SustainableDevelopment a grant to support events around the world in support of the SDG week which aims to build a collective movement for the SDGs with civil society partners through the following key activities:
a. Communicate: Communications, social media & press support for national partners
b. Enable: Regional engagement and coordination (engaging key regional campaigners to support and amplify frontline voices)
c. Amplify: Promotion of local frontline stories via the Zovu platform (focusing on frontline stories of those who are most directly affected by the need for climate and social justice)
The main activities took place during the Global Week of Action on 16-25 September 2022. Millions of people mobilised to demand action and to continue to put pressure on decision-makers in their countries to deliver on this agenda.
In total, the Global Week of Action 2022 included more than 130 million actions, involving millions of people in 190 countries and territories around the world. Community groups shared their stories and filled social media with messages of the changes we need to see in our world. The actions and stories of change makers were shared through social media using the hashtag #Act4SDGs as well as on the website here. The new online space Zovu has also now been launched to provide a longer-term platform to share stories of change makers from around the world: www.zovu.global.
In the spring of 2023, the UNDP issued a second larger grant to support the One World Trust / Action4SD partnership in its role as identify potential support events around the world and distributing the funds – larger to fund more events in view of 2023 being the halfway review point. As 2023 marked the halfway point for the SDGs, there were more activities around the Week of Action in September. Designed around three themes (inspiring, motivating, connecting), the overall UN campaign attracted 15% more actions than 2022. The Action4SD project received 340applications and issued 44 Action Grants which were delivered as planned and on budget. Videos of some of the events are shown on the Zovu website.
